Agriculture

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit

Agriculture is categorized as a primary sector in many national economies. By using natural resources to create products that are sold, bought and consumed, the field of agriculture has a large responsibility to the well-being and welfare of all individuals, communities, nations and the world. It is a sector that has the potential for great returns in the face of the essential need that it satisfies.

According to the World Bank, Agriculture accounts for one-third of global GDP and three-quarters of employment in Sub-Saharan Africa. However, hard work is not nearly enough to produce good crops. The sun and wind that affect it, and the water and nutrients that feed it, are all influenced by, and influencers of the process and products of the world’s growers and farmers.

These are variables that cannot always be controlled and are becoming less and less reliable with every passing year. From what we understand, climate change could cut crop yields by more than 25%, making the work of farmers even more difficult, frustrating and stressful. But also, very rewarding.

Less and less reliable with every passing year. From what we understand, climate change could cut crop yields by more than 25%,(2) making the work of farmers even more difficult, frustrating and stressful. But also, very rewarding.

Why? Because any single agricultural success story tells the narrative of hard work and smart decision making. The difference between a fruitful farmer and a failed farmer, is the ability to adapt to all circumstances, the readiness to innovate and push boundaries, and the refusal to accept a negative response as a final answer.

At LINK, we are passionate about agriculture because we have been strongly influenced by the passion of our partners and the hunger of our clients. We have chosen to work with Israeli partners in this sector because we believe the narrative of Israeli agriculture embodies the lessons of persistence, creativity and adaptability. We also understand that the technology and know-how, which has been created by adopting these attitudes, can greatly benefit the emerging markets that we work with.

There are 280 agro-technology companies and 200 agro technology-exporters, working within a range of sectors, under the agriculture umbrella, in Israel (see Israel export reference). In retrospect, this fact is very surprising, and this is why…

Israel was not always a fertile piece of land. In fact, quite the opposite. In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s before the state was created, the lay of the land was desert and swamp. Only about 14% of the country was arable and viable for farming. But given that there was no alternative, early pioneers made the most out of a challenging situation. They drained the swamps, created farming communities (called kibbutzim), and started to work the land, in the hope that they could make the desert blossom. The incredible success of agriculture in Israel is proof, not that they arrived to a juicy slice of farmland, rather, that they achieved this unlikely goal through innovation and unwavering determination.

Now Israel is a world leader in agro-tech, helping other countries face challenges of drought, land limitations and climate change, in order to make the impossible possible. The focus of Israeli agriculture is, adaptability under any circumstance.

However, this is not something that Israel has the copyright on~ anyone can create these same results with the right tools and the perseverance of a true entrepreneur! Because aren’t farmers also entrepreneurs? And every good entrepreneur knows it’s the people around them that give them the inspiration to create the success in their “field”.
